Harewood Moor Legend

Sheltered down by the River Hipper opposite Cathole Farm lies a ruined smallholding, which is the setting for a local legend.

The story goes that there is a large natural cavern under the ruined buildings, in which a mother and her two sons would bring stolen horses across the moor before hiding them in the cave. The horses would then be disguised and sold on. There is rumoured to be a passageway beneath a flagstone in the ruins, though this may just be the best part of a myth. Little is known about the history of the building, but it is likely to have been in its current state of dereliction for more than a century.

The legend inspired local historian CA Gedge to write the book "The Reluctant Rebel".

Had proposals in the 1890s been fully realised, this area would now sit beneath many feet of water, as a reservoir was once proposed here. The dam wall would have been built just a few yards downstream.
